Bimatoprost – Is it Available in the UK?

Bimatoprost is the main ingredient in Latisse, the product that doubles lash thickness and makes them up to 25% longer and 18% darker when used like eyeliner on a daily basis. This prescription treatment for hypotrichosis is available in the US as a cosmetic (not medical) product, but is not yet licensed for use in the UK, although it has been approved by the MHRA for clinical trials.

The drug works by allowing the outflow of fluid from the eyeball, a process known as ocular hypertension. This is important because raised pressure within the eyeball can damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss. Lumigan increases the flow of a liquid called aqueous humour from the inside of the eyeball, which lowers the pressure in the eyeball.

In a number of studies of the drug, bimatoprost was found to be safe for use by adults over the age of 18. It is applied directly to the eye as drops and should not be swallowed or used on other parts of the body.

It is possible that bimatoprost can affect the development of a baby during pregnancy, so pregnant women should not take it. However, the small amount that gets into the bloodstream is unlikely to be harmful to the unborn child, and if a woman becomes concerned, she should consult her doctor immediately.

The drugs can interact with a number of other medicines, including glaucoma drops and some antidepressants. It is therefore important to tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially herbal remedies and supplements. bimatoprost uk
