How to Create Beautiful Paper Quilling Art

Paper Quilling Art is the delicate process of rolling, twisting, and bending thin strips of colorful paper into intricate shapes. This decorative craft has been around since the 15th century (and possibly even earlier) and is crafted in many countries across the world.

It’s a great way to pass the time, as well as to relax and unwind. In fact, it’s been scientifically proven that crafting can reduce stress levels and improve mental wellbeing. Plus, it’s a fantastic activity for kids to help develop their fine motor skills.

To get started, you’ll need a few supplies: a quilling tool (ideally a slotted one), glue and a workboard. The slotted tool is essential because it makes it much easier to form different shapes. It’s also a good idea to invest in a circle sizing board, which has predrilled holes of various sizes so you can roll your papers into precise circles every time.

Before you start forming your designs, it’s a good idea to sketch out where they’ll go on your workboard using a pencil or tracing paper. This will give you a guide to follow and ensure that your finished pieces are evenly spaced and consistent.

Artist Yulia Brodskaya uses her quilling to celebrate people and nature, as well as where the two intersect. Her work features vivid colors and a sense of movement that is unique to the medium. She’s particularly adept at capturing the look and feel of Impressionist brushstrokes, which is evident in her piece that mimics Van Gogh’s Irises. Paper Quilling Art
